CORONATION DAY
Coronation Day or Wan Chattra Mongkol is a public holiday in Thailand to celebrate the anniversary of the coronation of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej as Rama IX, the ninth king of Chakri dynasty. This celebration is celebrated on May 5th each year.
The first Coronation Day was celebrated on 6 April 1851 when King Mongkut was crowned as King Rama IV. Before then, there was no Coronation Day celebration since the coronation of the King was held by only high ranking officials.
For the other countries to notice the importance of Coronation Day, King Rama IV issued a royal announcement to hold a formal ceremony for his Coronation Day. The day was named “Ceremony to Commemorate the Royal Regalia” to make things easier. The date when King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s was crowned Rama IX of Thailand is observed as the current Coronation Day.
